The global pandemic has derailed progress toward the SDGs as developing countries now balance long-term investments in health, education, roads, electricity, and water with spending to protect lives and livelihoods. Bringing the SDGs within reach by 2030 will take a global effort from all stakeholders.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has run the numbers and is publishing a framework for developing countries to consider policy choices that can raise long term growth and bring in private investments in SDG projects. In this conversation with Professor Ian Goldin, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva will look at country case studies and the kinds of reforms each can make to move towards the SDGs by 2030.

Although it looks as though the building blocks of prosperity have moved just a bit farther out of reach, the roadmap for how to get there is now clearer.

The fourth lecture in The D’Arcy Lectures series, exploring the concept of Common Good through the three lenses of Aristotle’s philosophy, Catholic teaching, and contemporary political liberalism.

SYNOPSIS
‘Politics’ and ‘political’ are widely used as labels in speaking of social situations in which there is conflict. A more precise understanding of politics will be defended in which it appears as just one form of rule. Following Aristotle’s usage, it is argued that not all forms of rule of states are political in the full sense. This approach entails a challenge whether Catholic Social Thought can accommodate an adequate account of conflict.

This year’s D’Arcy Lectures are delivered by Revd Dr Patrick Riordan.

Part of the Colloquium on AI Ethics series presented by the Institute for Ethics in AI.

This event is also part of the Humanities Cultural Programme, one of the founding stones for the future Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities.

Over the past decade, algorithmic accountability has become an important concern for social scientists, computer scientists, journalists, and attorneys. Exposés have sparked vibrant debates about algorithmic sentencing. Researchers have exposed tech giants showing women ads for lower-paying jobs, discriminating against the aged, deploying deceptive dark patterns to trick consumers into buying things, and manipulating users toward rabbit holes of extremist content. Public-spirited regulators have begun to address algorithmic transparency and online fairness, building on the work of legal scholars who have called for technological due process, platform neutrality, and nondiscrimination principles.

This policy work is just beginning, as experts translate academic research and activist demands into statutes and regulations. Lawmakers are proposing bills requiring basic standards of algorithmic transparency and auditing. We are starting down on a long road toward ensuring that AI-based hiring practices and financial underwriting are not used if they have a disparate impact on historically marginalized communities. And just as this “first wave” of algorithmic accountability research and activism has targeted individual encounters with existing systems, an emerging “second wave” of algorithmic accountability has begun to address more structural concerns. Both waves will be essential to ensure a fairer, and more genuinely emancipatory, political economy of technology. Second wave work is particularly important when it comes to illuminating the promise & perils of formalizing evaluative criteria.

The fifth lecture in The D’Arcy Lectures series, exploring the concept of Common Good through the three lenses of Aristotle’s philosophy, Catholic teaching, and contemporary political liberalism.

SYNOPSIS
Many theologians addressing these questions of politics and the common good begin their discussion with St. Augustine’s City of God. This lecture argues that there is a trap in taking this starting point, a trap that Aquinas avoided by combining his reading of Augustine, the Theologian, with a reading of the Philosopher Aristotle. It suggests a reworking of Augustine’s analysis to retain the theological benefit of his ideas for understanding politics today.

Join us and Dr. Latha Palaniappan to discuss how our genes affect our responses to medication

Free and open to the community

There are known differences in drug metabolism, outcomes, and side effects across racial and ethnic groups, and not everyone responds to medications in the same way. A medicine that works well for others may not work well for you, resulting in significant side effects. In the US, adverse drug reactions cause a great number of hospitalizations and are a leading cause of death in hospitalized patients. Pharmacogenomics, or individualized drug therapy, can help us prevent dangerous drug reactions by pre-identifying at-risk patients. Pharmacogenomics analyses can study your unique genetic profile to determine which medications are likely to help you or harm you, before you even take them. Through this avenue of precision health, we can tailor medical care to every individual, and provide every patient with the right medication at the right dosage at the right time.

To see the visible effects of the human footprint on natural ecosystems, look no further than the Amazon rainforest. As in most of the world, agricultural expansion and intensification are driving land-use and land-cover change in the Amazon. The world’s largest tropical forest has exceptionally high rates of land use change that are accelerating forest loss to a critical threshold. Scientists and civil society are increasingly documenting the connection between forests and land use that serve as input for government decision-making. Land use planning is a systematic, multi-stakeholder process that can provide a sustainable means for local people to manage natural resources in a way that meets the needs of both current and future generations. In this session, the panelists will present their experiences working in different countries with government agencies in the Amazon on land use planning as a tool to deter deforestation and preserve ecosystem services.

Our Conversations format is designed to spark engaging discussion, learn from others’ experiences, and promote connections with collaborators old and new.

An important challenge in many applications is the prevention of unwanted nonspecific biomolecular and microorganism attachment on surfaces. To address this challenge, our goals are twofold. First, we strive to provide a fundamental understanding of nonfouling mechanisms at the molecular level. Second, we aim to develop biocompatible materials based on the molecular principles learned. As a result, we have shown that zwitterionic materials and surfaces are highly resistant to nonspecific protein adsorption and microorganism attachment from complex media.

In this talk, in addition to design principles, I will discuss the application of zwitterionic material to implants, stem cell cultures for controlled preservation/expansion/differentiation, medical devices and drug delivery carriers. With zwitterionic coatings, hydrogels or nanoparticles, results show no capsule formation upon subcutaneous implantation in mice for one year, expansion of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) without differentiation, no anti-coagulants needed for artificial lungs in sheep, and no antibodies generated against zwitterionic polymers. Currently, we are performing a fundamental study of material interactions with the immune system, developing immunomodulatory materials and safe/organ-targeting delivery carriers and translating our biomaterials to applications ranging from immunotherapy and vaccine to regenerative medicine.
